Players assume the roles of various stakeholders, including energy companies, large corporations, municipalities, cities, government, and investors.

Throughout the game, they are collectively responsible for addressing the energy needs of the fictional island within the game. The decisions they make must contribute to the availability, affordability, and sustainability of the island’s energy supply.

The game forces players to balance their own objectives with those of the group. Together, they must navigate the complex stakeholder landscape, advocating for both their own interests and the overall well-being of the island.

The Challenge

Help us to engage new colleagues, convey our mission, and onboard them effectively.

In 2021, Philips Domestic Appliances (DA) separated from its parent company Royal Philips and became an independent entity. Two years later, it rebranded as Versuni. As a new organization with its own culture and identity, Versuni needed a fitting and scalable onboarding method to represent its unique ethos and integrate new employees effectively.

Research Phase

A successful onboarding process starts with thorough research. We investigated the target audience, potential learning objectives, required content for the modules, and previously proposed ideas. We also reviewed Versuni’s requirements: the game needed to be scalable, engaging, and educational. With a clear understanding of all these needs, we developed a tailored solution: a custom online onboarding game and an interactive onboarding booklet. We employed the Agile methodology to bring our vision to life.

Onboarding Game and Booklet

The onboarding game immerses new hires in Versuni’s operations, work methods, mission, values, and culture. Once they complete the game, they can access the interactive booklet at any time for additional information about the company, its practices, and answers to further questions.

Results

The game proved not only to be enjoyable but also effectively scalable for employees worldwide. The combination of the game and the booklet ensures that new hires quickly become familiar with Versuni, are enthusiastic about their new roles, and are well-informed to contribute to the company’s ambitions.

The Challenge

How can we kick off the conversation about safety and the role of leadership in an engaging way?

Safety is an extremely important topic, especially for companies dealing with hazardous materials or equipment. Eneco is a prime example. While managers who are further removed from the operational side do (indirectly) impact the safety of technicians, the subject was not high on their agenda. Frisse Blikken’s Game Studio changed that, helping Eneco address this issue with a customized escape room.


With around 5 million active energy contracts and more than 3,000 employees, Eneco is one of the largest energy suppliers in the Netherlands.

Activating Managers

Eneco was clearly not looking for a conventional method to reignite the safety conversation. The goal was to not only inform Eneco’s managers about their role in safety but also to motivate them to actively fulfill this role. Knowledge and time are crucial for safe work practices, and an escape room perfectly combines these factors.

Phones in the Blender

During Eneco’s leadership day, 25 groups took on the challenge of safely connecting three wind turbines within an hour. As if that wasn’t challenging enough, there was a clear risk involved. All participants had to hand in their mobile phones before entering the escape room. This was a logical decision, as phones are valuable but also the biggest disruptors of attention and concentration. The phones were placed in one of three blenders. If a player committed a safety violation, one of the blenders would start whirring. As you can imagine, safety became significantly more important.

Clear Importance and Role

The escape room effectively reopened the conversation about safety within Eneco in a way that left a lasting impact on the managers. The importance of safe working practices and their role in it is now clearer than ever. It is now up to the managers to continue the conversation within their teams.

Serious Game Attracts Serious Talent

The Challenge

There’s plenty of young talent in the Netherlands, but attracting and retaining the right candidates isn’t always easy. To stand out among other employers and highlight the Operations Traineeship, Boskalis has been collaborating with the Game Studio of Frisse Blikken since 2018. Our task: to develop surprising recruitment and selection processes to attract the right trainees.

Boskalis is a multinational company specializing in large-scale and complex design, maintenance, and construction of infrastructure. With over 11,000 experts on board, Boskalis is constantly on the lookout for new talent, especially for its Operations Traineeship. Years of collaboration with Boskalis have given us a deep understanding of the company, its mission, and the ideal employee profile. Together, we design eye-catching campaigns that perfectly match Boskalis and attract the right candidates. Here’s what the 2023 edition looked like.

The potential candidates for the traineeship are still studying when Boskalis approaches them. Unsurprisingly, many students are keen on a good cup of coffee. That’s why we visited various colleges and universities with a standout coffee truck. The coffee was the perfect icebreaker to inform and excite potential candidates about the traineeship. During the campaign, we spoke to over 500 students with the right profile.

From Excitement to Selection

Once the applications start rolling in, it’s crucial to maintain the candidates’ enthusiasm. How? With clear and consistent communication about the next steps in the selection process, delivered through channels that resonate with the new generation. We handle this for Boskalis by developing and executing a strong communication plan. In the latest edition, we created a mix of communication tools and channels—from videos to webinars—to engage closely with the candidates.

Gamified Selection Day

The grand finale of the selection process was the gamified selection day, where candidates got a taste of what it’s like to work at Boskalis. Through a serious game developed specifically for Boskalis, candidates were put through a real challenge they might face during the traineeship, for four hours. As they played, assessors observed not just how they approached the challenge but also how they collaborated with others. The result speaks for itself: the 2023 traineeship was filled with outstanding trainees.

Escape Room to the Future: Get to Know Aegon

The Challenge

How can we inspire students to join our company? That was the question Aegon asked.
The company invited the Game Studio of Frisse Blikken to brainstorm solutions. Our answer? An online escape room.

Aegon is an international provider of life insurance, pensions, and asset management. With its headquarters in The Hague, Aegon offers innovative financial products and services to millions of customers in more than 20 countries.

Engaging and Relevant

Together with Aegon, we identified the key aspects of Aegon’s culture that needed to be highlighted to make the digital escape room both engaging and relevant. The goal was to create an immersive experience that is not only informative but also fun and interactive, allowing students to genuinely experience what it’s like to work at Aegon.

Immersive Storyline

We crafted an immersive storyline where players tackle the following question: “If I could shape Aegon’s future twenty years from now, what would I change today?” This forward-looking approach encourages players to think creatively and strategically. With this overarching idea in mind, we designed the escape room. The introductory video at the start of the game immerses students in relevant content, the challenges within the escape room represent Aegon’s various departments, and the puzzles are introduced through video calls with Aegon colleagues. The combination of these elements provides a personal and authentic introduction to the company.

Successful Introduction

The results are impressive: 75% of players expressed a strong interest in working at Aegon after playing our game. Additionally, all players praised the unique introduction experience, stating they preferred the escape room over traditional methods of company introductions, such as slides or case studies.

Simulating to Reflect: A Fair Government

The Challenge

Help our officials engage in meaningful discussions about "a fair government."

When the Netherlands was shaken by the childcare benefits scandal, the housing crisis, and other pressing public issues, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) sought an effective method for its civil servants to reflect—specifically to become more conscious of their role in maintaining “a just government.” Frisse Blikken’s Game Studio provided this powerful moment of reflection for the Ministry in the form of an energetic simulation game.

BZK is responsible for ensuring a good quality of life, housing, and work in the Netherlands and the Caribbean Netherlands. The civil servants protect the most valuable asset in the Netherlands: the Constitution. They are therefore responsible for ensuring a fair, transparent government that all citizens can trust.

Motivating Reflection

The civil servants at BZK are the cornerstone of a reliable, engaged, and just government. With growing distrust in the Netherlands, reflecting on how to uphold these values was necessary. However, reflection wasn’t the end goal; it needed to serve as a motivating start for positive and practically applicable change.

Confrontational Role Play

Frisse Blikken’s Game Studio developed and facilitated an energetic role-playing game that simulated challenges in engagement, accessibility, and justice in the relationship between the government and citizens. The task: rapidly abolish all postal communication, leaving a significant portion of the population at risk of social exclusion. The players were given the important mission of finding a solution with complete creative freedom. Inevitably, during the game, players fell into traps that often go unnoticed in their daily work. These confrontations were then translated into lessons for the future during a reflection session afterward.

Energy and Depth

The energy sparked by the game among the civil servants quickly led to deep discussions on justice, without losing sight of the practical applicability of the proposed changes. The result is a motivated group of civil servants who are now more aware and ready to work towards ensuring a truly fair government.

The Challenge

How can we innovatively highlight the strategy of our parent company E.ON to our employees?

How can we creatively draw attention to the strategy of parent company E.ON among our employees? This was the question Essent Netherlands asked. A detailed strategy document or presentation doesn’t resonate with everyone. Therefore, Essent turned to Frisse Blikken. Together, we developed an eye-catching interactive podcast.


Essent is one of the largest energy suppliers in the Netherlands. In addition to providing gas and electricity to millions of Dutch people, the company is also leading the charge in the energy transition.

Engaging Employees Interactively

Essent had a clear vision of what it wanted: a unique way to highlight E.ON’s corporate strategy that would make an impact. To capture employees’ attention and truly involve them in the strategy, we proposed an interactive podcast: the Strategy Safari. Listeners choose what they hear and in what order.

The Interactive Podcast

We handled the technology behind the podcast, as well as the communication and activation leading up to its launch. Working closely with Essent, we wrote the content for all components. Over 15 different speakers are featured, including the CEO and the director of PSV. Additionally, we used videos, posters, and personal invitations to activate the campaign. The safari theme allowed listeners to chart their own path. After completing the safari, listeners could continue discussing the strategy online with colleagues. They could spin a digital wheel within the podcast module that presented questions to spark engaging conversations.

Results

Nearly 1,000 Essent colleagues listened to the Strategy Safari and were impressed. The evaluation showed that they rated the podcast an 8. Essent was so impressed with the campaign that it submitted it for a European Excellence Award.

The Challenge

Experience what the energy transition means for your work and collaboration with others.

Working on the energy transition is one thing. Feeling the impact it has on your own work and collaboration with others is another. Alliander asked Frisse Blikken how it could engage its employees in the newly introduced chain collaboration and help them experience the impact of their behavior and leadership on the organization. Our solution? An effective simulation game focused on the energy transition and chain collaboration.

Multi-stakeholder game

For the successful implementation of the organization’s new structure, it’s crucial to properly introduce the new chains to the employees. Moreover, they need to experience the impact of their role and behavior on the new chain collaboration. To practice this in a risk-free, interactive, and inspiring way, we developed a simulation game: Ohmniversum.

Ohmniversum

This educational and inspiring simulation game is an exact replica of the new chains within Alliander. In groups of 20-25 people, employees spend 5.5 hours in Ohmniversum, where they work together on various realistic challenges focused on the energy transition in a fictional version of Alliander. Throughout the game, players reflect on their own and each other’s attitudes and behaviors, and how these influence their success in the game, symbolizing the results of the organization.

Goals Achieved

Nearly 2,000 employees have participated in Ohmniversum. Those who played the game reported that it truly allowed them to experience Alliander’s mission in the energy transition and understand how chain collaboration contributes to it. As a result, both goals were successfully achieved.
